Monument Sculpture Special place

Gerhard Lucas Meyer is considered the founder of Ilseder Hütte and the Peine rolling mill and made a significant contribution to the success of Peine as an industrial location.

The bronze bust on a stone plinth shows the likeness of Gerhard Lucas Meyer. The inscription on the plinth is a quote by Meyer: "I must work as long as it is day."

It was originally erected in 1983 in the courtyard of the Gerhard Lucas Meyer Foundation's retirement apartments in Winkel. Since September 18, 2001, it has been located in front of the Forum.

Meyer had led the Ilseder Hütte to commercial success after the founder had to file for bankruptcy in 1858. He also founded the Peine rolling mill, which went into operation in 1873, and thus made a significant contribution to the development of Peine as an industrial location. Meyer also founded exemplary social institutions for the time.

The bust, of which there are several identical examples, was made in the 1920s. It originally belonged to Meyer's eldest son and was left to the foundation of the same name by Anna Margret Janovicz, the granddaughter of Gerhard Lucas Meyer.
