The steel sculpture was donated by Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG (now Peiner Träger GmbH) to mark the 750th anniversary of the town of Peine.
The "P" is a steel sculpture and a gift from Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG (now: Peiner Träger GmbH) to the town of Peine to mark its 750th anniversary. It was erected in front of the town hall on October 23, 1973. An extension was planned in the 1980s, so the steel sculpture was dismantled and moved to its current location in 1988.
It symbolizes the company's connection to the town, is four metres high and weighs two and a half tons. The sculpture depicts the typical products of Salzgitter AG: The base is formed by a Peiner beam that becomes narrower towards the top. A hot-rolled wide strip from the Salzgitter plant tapers downwards and symbolizes the rolled flat products. The upper and lower sheet edges are joined together by the third main product, steel bars in the form of prestressing steel.
The construction was designed by Karl-Wilhelm Putsch, Spokesman of the Executive Board, and Dr. Klaus Köhler. It was created by employees of the company at the Peine plant.
