The tourist information office Amt Neuhaus - located in the beautiful marshland village of Konau on the Elbe cycle path - has extensive information ready for you.
Amt Neuhaus at a glance
The municipality of Amt Neuhaus lies in the heart of the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve. A visit to the region guarantees pure relaxation. For the vastness of the landscape - nestled between the Elbe and the now densely forested former dune landscape - is an Eldorado for nature lovers. The region is characterised by numerous rare animal and plant species. Storks, lapwings, cranes and beavers can be seen here, as well as numerous migratory resting birds and winter visitors such as Whooper and Bewick swans, Bean Geese and White-fronted Geese in the autumn and winter months.
The numerous avenues of trees in the eastern part of the village, which attract many visitors in spring and autumn, are typical of Amt Neuhaus. The municipality's natural bathing lakes are also appreciated by guests.
In the marshland village of Konau, the tourist information centre and the archaeological centre provide tips for excursions and information on things worth seeing in the region. An exhibition provides information on the old livestock breeds of the Elbe River Landscape Ark Region. Border towers, small museums and the border history trail remind visitors of the former German-German border and life in the restricted area. And in the Kulturscheune Konau 25, top-class actors and musicians delight with great programmes.
And the other villages in the region as well as the main town of Neuhaus also captivate with their own charm thanks to the old building fabric. Special churches and chapels such as the St. Marien Church in Tripkau with its unusual interior design are always worth a detour.
In the Suden lowlands with their wide open spaces, Heck cattle graze all year round. These offspring of the aurochs, which became extinct in the 17th century, share the pasture with the semi-wild Konik horses, thus creating ideal living conditions for the white stork with the semi-open pasture landscape. They are best explored from the Storkenkate in Preten. From here, a walk along the nature discovery trail is also worthwhile.
The shifting sand dune in Stixe and the Laaver Moor, which is somewhat hidden in the forest, are natural spectacles of a special kind. Tip: a circular walk from the Stixer Wanderdüne also passes this moor - a varied and recommendable tour.
