270 years of glass history of the 5 glassworks in Gnarrenburg from 1750 to the present day

Did you know that the art of glassmaking was produced in Gnarrenburg for over 100 years in a total of four large glassworks for Germany and the whole world?

Gnarrenburg produced glass roof pans, crystal decanters, lamps and also beer, wine and jenever bottles, honour plates and glasses, perfume bottles, cucumber barrels and even glass mines (for the military).

The most important item is probably the legendary medicine bottle with a dropper, which was invented and patented in the "Marienhütte"  glassworks in 1881. Its success was the starting point for a complete worldwide range of medicine and pharmacy bottles.

These and countless products in a wide variety of designs from over 225 years of history of the Gnarrenburg glass industry as well as moulds and tools for glass production can be found in the glass museum in the renovated railway station building.

The museum also displays tools and historical documents and shows how the glass products reached the end customer. You can also learn more about the exciting rise of the glass industry and the "death of the glassworks" in the 1970s.
